Surfing is a sport whereby the journey and the search for a wave is just as important as riding the waves themselves. However, each journey poses a unique set of obstacles in that popular destinations are often remote, exclusive to people with cars and therefore expensive to travel to. An activity that exemplifies this set of problems is the sport of surfing.

In Auckland you need to travel at least 40 minutes or even several hours to find good surf. This rules out any means of public transport, taxi service or traditional ride share as a means of transportation. Not to mention the hassle of logistically traveling with a surfboard. When the surf is good everyone is heading in the same direction. Many making the journey alone. The opportunity lies in those spare seats.

With fuel prices on the rise people are now making a conscious effort to save fuel when and where they can. More cars heading to remote locations means crowded roads and car parks, putting pressure on local communities and infrastructure, while contributing to greater carbon emissions.

Stuck at home with no ride?, or just want to split the petrol costs and head out with some new mates? - Pilgrim has you covered.

As a driver, browse ride requests to your desired location or create a listing for where you are already heading. If you are looking for a ride simply log a ride request or browse existing drivers listings. See where you fit within an existing ride’s journey map to see if you are the right candidate or send your request to the driver if your situation may change. Only when both parties are happy with the details and have made first contact through an integrated messaging platform e.g Facebook messenger, the ride is confirmed. Cashless payments are handled through your credit or debit card upon completion of the return journey. Background checks, a two way review system and easy cancellation ensure driver and rider safety and comfort.

Riders and drivers can see mutual connections and degrees of separation between other Pilgrims through their “Caravan”, a visual representation of past journeys and connections made with other users. Users can also build up their Journey portfolio by uploading past rides, images and videos to their “Story”, a feature that aims to capture and share user journeys with the wider Pilgrim community. These features create a transparent environment and eliminate any anonymity in its user base.

Fares are calculated using the distance traveled on Google Maps, the mileage rate of the car in use based on AA records. The total cost of the ride is equally shared between the number of people in the car including the driver. Where traditional ride share drivers are signing up to make a profit, our drivers are just looking to share a ride, and share the costs. They’re regular surfers, who want to fill their empty seats and get reimbursed for the costs of driving — from fuel, maintenance, and wear and tear.
